Why volunteer at the Derbyshire Law Centre?

Volunteering with us gives you an opportunity to contribute to the running of an important service in our local community. Depending on your volunteering role, you may gain work experience and skills that will improve your confidence and give you an insight into how front line charities work.

Assessment Volunteer

Our assessment team provide the front of house service for the Derbyshire Law Centre.

They are trained to deal with initial enquiries and help to identify all of the callers issues and assess how we can best help them. This role is office-based and includes communication with clients via telephone calls, face to face , emails, video conferencing and text. In this role you will help to ensure that we did a holistic approach, thinking about all of the related problems that a caller may have. It includes speaking to enquirers, making internal appointments, giving information (but not legal advice) or signposting to a more appropriate agency.

Feedback and Evaluation Volunteer

As a feedback and evaluation volunteer you’ll be looking out for the long term wellbeing of our clients and seeing how we can improve our services. You will be contacting current and former clients of the Derbyshire Law centre to speak to them about their experience. This role is office based and includes communication with clients via telephone calls and sometimes face to face. In this role you’ll help to collect responses via our feedback form and do a ‘check-in’ for client wellbeing.

Communication and Events Volunteer

As part of our engagement team you will help to raise the profile of Derbyshire Law Centre within our local community. You’ll support the work of the communication and outreach workers by attending information and fundraising events. This role is office and events based and includes doing pop-up events at schools and colleges; community groups and organisations; fairs & fetes in the local area. Alongside this you will help to make sure that our leaflets and literature are available in important information hubs like libraries and community halls.

Administrative Support

In this role you’ll help support our Administration team to ensure the smooth running of the Law Centre. This role is perfect for someone who is looking to gain work skills experience to help them in a business or office environment. You will help with filing, postage, basic typing and telephone conversations. This role is office based and will give you an insight into the many elements of what it takes to run a welcoming workplace.

Student and Work placement

Each year we welcome students from Schools, Colleges and University who are looking to gain work experience. This is arranged through your education provider and is individual to the person looking to apply. Previously we have supported University students on a weekly basis to give them an insight into our legal practice and have accepted GCSE students on week placements on a variety of topics. Tasks and responsibilities depend on the length of placement and the student’s course requirements.

The Step Into Work Project

Our volunteering is supported by the National Lottery Community Fund which has enabled us to offer more volunteering opportunities to Derbyshire residents.

The Step Into Work project is specifically designed to encourage young people aged 14-25 and individuals with disabilities and/or long term health conditions. We aim to induct, train, support and nurture volunteers to increase their skills and confidence so that they can help the local community. Find out more on our Projects page.
