Free workshop for deaf & hard of hearing people

Derbyshire Law Centre is proud to ha working in partnership in response to deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing people being fed up of being treated unfairly in work or when accessing goods and services.

British Deaf Association, Communication Unlimited and Deaf-initely Women have joined forces with Derbyshire Law Centre and Cloisters Chambers to deliver an accessible online workshop to inform deaf, deafblinf and hard of hearing people of their rights in work and when accessing goods & services.

Lisa Haythorne, a Solicitor who specialises in discrimination law, said “I have seen many deaf people who have been discriminated against but are unaware of their rights in discrimination law. Due to their deafness and the lack of captions/subtitles and sign language interpretation support, they miss out a lot in getting information on their rights. Fo the past two months we have been working in partnership with three local deaf charities to make this happen.”

The Zoom online workshop will take place on Thursday 15^th July 2021, 2pm – 4pm and  is FREE for all hearing impaired people. The workshop being jointly delivered and supported by: British Deaf Association, Communication Unlimited, Deaf-initely Women, Derbyshire Law Centre and Cloisters Chambers with support from two British Sign Language interpreters and captioners/subtitling support from two speech to text operators.

Teresa Waldron, who is deafblind herself and works at Derbyshire Law Centre said “I am one of the fortunate ones to be working in an inclusive workplace. All too often I learn that deaf and hard of hearing people are being excluded in getting jobs or being unfairly treated in work due to lack of understanding and support.”
